In-network translation: Spec Sheet

In-network translation, a feature of EDI Services, provides data translation and message delivery between EDI trading partners. This service allows you to out-task the data mapping and EDI data translation feature of your EDI implementation, allowing you more time to focus on core business requirements.

The service includes:

  • Map creation and maintenance
  • Translation to and from EDI data formats; standards supported are ANSI X12, ODETTE, UN/EDIFACT, and UN/TDI
  • Transaction delivery to and from the trading partner's EDI mailbox.

 Who can use in-network translation

In-network translation works with Information Exchange, the mailbox feature of EDI Services, as well as with equivalent mailbox services of other EDI providers supported by EDI VAN Interconnect. EDI VAN Interconnect supports trading relationships between customers of more than 25 EDI value-added networks (VANs). Users of Information Exchange can elect to have their EDI transactions translated into EDI format as they arrive from trading partners, as well as have their application data translated into EDI transactions when sent to trading partners. This means you can do business electronically with hundreds or even thousands of EDI trading partners around the world, without having to manage the complexities of data translation yourself.

 Implementation

Trading partner relationships and translation mappings must be defined before you can use the in-network translation service. GXS performs the setup of your in-network translation maps under a special contract. The time and effort required to set up the service is unique to each customer, depending on your level of experience with EDI; the number, type and complexity of documents you want to trade; and the number of trading partners you want to include in your program. Implementation may include the following services:

  • Map creation
  • Mailbox setup (as needed)
  • Trading partner registrations
  • Connectivity testing
  • End-to-end document translation and transmission testing.

 How in-network translation works

The in-network translation feature of EDI Services supports both incoming and outgoing EDI data translation. For incoming transactions destined for your company, GXS receives the file via an Information Exchange mailbox (or an equivalent mailbox service offered by another EDI provider and supported by EDI VAN Interconnect), translates the data into the format requested, and forwards the data to your EDI mailbox. GXS can deliver the translated data immediately, or deliver it at a predetermined time. Senders (your trading partners) will be notified if errors are detected.

Data that you want to send to your trading partners is also handled through Information Exchange. GXS will receive the files that you send, parse them, translate the data as requested and route or deliver the documents to the appropriate trading partners. Again, the sender -- in this case, your company -- will be notified if errors are detected.

In-network translation can translate data:

  • From EDI standard format to application data
  • From application data to EDI data

You can change maps or add and delete trading partners as your requirements change.

When you use EDI Services for your EDI mailbox, you can take advantage of Information Exchange value-added capabilities such as distribution lists and split billing.

The difference between out-tasking and outsourcing

With in-network translation, GXS delivers a function that would, otherwise, require software and hardware resources on your own system. This offering provides a task-specific service. It does not include EDI guidebook creation, maintenance, or distribution. That remains the customer's responsibility. Nor is this service EDI outsourcing. Outsourcing normally denotes an end-to-end managed service that includes taking ownership and/or responsibility for the customer's resources.

 Internet access

GXS offers access to Information Exchange and in-network translation services through the Internet.
