Date posted: 31 July 2001

Customers Affected: All system network architecture (SNA) leased line customers utilizing Expedite(TM)/Direct Version 2, Release 1 (2.1) via access to Information Exchange.

Highlight

This Technical Bulletin contains information regarding the update of Expedite/Direct 2.1 that will enable SNA leased line customers to send and receive records up to 4090 bytes in length. The previous record size was up to 250 bytes in length.

This update is planned for availability beginning on December 16, 2001. A pilot for the updated Expedite/Direct 2.1 will be available beginning on August 5, 2001, through December 15, 2001.

  Description

Expedite/Direct 2.1 Update

Expedite/Direct 2.1 has been updated to allow SNA connected customers to send and receive records up to 4090 bytes in length. In order to send and receive the larger records, SNA customers must specify SNALRG as their USERDATA value instead of one of the current values of SNAEDI or BSCEDI. Customers must also define a logmode with a request unit (RU) size of 4096 bytes. Customers using the USERDATA values of SNAEDI and BSCEDI are still subject to the 256 byte RU size, and current send and receive record length restrictions.

There are no new commands or command parameters, but the LENGTH parameter of the RECEIVE command will now allow a value of up to 4090 when the USERDATA value is SNALRG. When a USERDATA value of BSCEDI or SNAEDI is specified, however, the maximum LENGTH value remains at 250. Received records are not delimited by inter-record separators of any kind. All command defaults remain the same in order to maintain the methods of processing inherent in the current Expedite/Direct 2.1.

   Migration considerations
  All leased line customers will have access to the updated Expedite/Direct 2.1. Any leased line customers who wish to use the new function and have a static TYPETERM definition in the Information Exchange Common Front End will need to have their definitions updated, so the SENDSIZE and RECEIVESIZE values are set to 004096.

   Special CONNECT: Mailbox user setup instructions
  The Options Definition File for the remote definition of Expedite/Direct 2.1 should be updated as follows:

USERDATA=SNALRG
MEDIA=BX
LOGMODE=RJE3770L (must specify a logmode with an RU size of 4096)

In addition, the VSAM Batch Queue should be defined to allow for the largest record a customer expects to receive.

   Pilot considerations
  Customers may test their connection to the updated Expedite/Direct 2.1 by connecting to a pilot of Expedite/Direct 2.1 that will be available beginning on August 5, 2001, through December 15, 2001. The pilot can handle bisynchronous protocol through dial and leased line connections and Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC).

Customers wishing to participate in the pilot with dial and leased line connections must order the connection to the product EDIRECTB for the bisynchronous protocol, and EDIRECTA for the SDLC protocol. They must also change their batch logon record.

Customers wishing to test with a leased line connection must also order a connection to the logical unit (LU) IBM0AT49 and define this LU for their leased line connection.

The pilot for Expedite/Direct 2.1 is scheduled for discontinuation on December 15, 2001 . This front end may be used for other future pilots. Therefore, customers should not depend on this region for continued production use. Customers should utilize their normal defined Expedite/Direct 2.1 for an ongoing connection to Information Exchange.
